How To Prepare Your Home For Sale

Selling your home is a long process, but the end result can be very rewarding. Many prospective buyers do not have the foresight or vision to imagine the potential in your home when it is filled with your furniture, possessions and memorabilia. That is why you must show your home as a clean, simple, beautiful place to live. You want a potential buyer to feel that they can move in and immediately feel comfortable in your home. Here are some things you can do that will turn your home into a showcase model:

Clean Up!

When showing your house for sale to potential buyers, it is imperative that it be spotlessly clean. This means that all rooms, especially the kitchen and bathrooms, are immaculately clean. Deep clean your house by doing the following:

  • Wash, rinse and dry all tile surfaces and floors in the bathrooms and kitchen.
  • Steam clean your carpets and area rugs so they are a uniform color without any stains.
  • Clean any hard to remove carpet stains with vinegar and baking soda and rinse with a damp cloth.
  • Wash the walls in all rooms and hallways to remove any marks or discoloration.
  • Professionally clean and rehang your drapes and curtains.
  • Straighten and clean your bedrooms and store all extra blankets and pillows out of sight.
  • Clean all windows and mirrors with vinegar and water so they are shiny and bright.
  • Dust all shelves, countertops and appliances.
  • Dust, wash and polish all wood, stone and linoleum floors so they shine.
  • Vacuum all couch and chair cushions and pillows.
  • Air out all closets, cupboards and rooms so that they smell fresh and clean.

Clear Out!

Store away as much furniture as possible. In this situation, less is definitely better.

  • Put away all personal photos and memorabilia so that a potential buyer can imagine their own personal items in the home.
  • Get rid of all clutter and papers of any kind.
  • Put your possessions into boxes and stack the boxes neatly in the garage or rent a small storage unit to hold your personal items while showing your home.
  • Organize your closets and cupboards so they have just a few items in them and have a lot of open, empty space.
  • Box up and store most of your books so that bookshelves have plenty of clear, empty space.

Transform your house into a clean and airy haven that anyone would love to visit. Simplify everything!

  • Open all drapes and curtains and flood your house with light.
  • Bring in some potted plants and flowers from the garden to soften corners and beautify your rooms.
  • Open up a window or two to clear and renew the air.

When selling your home, it is important to show it in the best light possible. To do this, clean up, clear out, and sparkle!
